Prominent businesswoman offers significant amount of airport lands to LIAT

Owner and CEO of Antigua Hangers Inc. Makeda Mikael is proposing a land deal to LIAT 1973 Ltd in what she terms as an, “Offer they cannot refuse.”

Mikael owns the approximately 26 acres of land immediately surrounding the V.C. Bird International Airport. These lands were acquired through court settlement between herself and Allan Stanford worth US $20 million.

When asked what she expected in return as a result of the exchange, the businesswoman said that, “My offer is for LIAT to be the substantive owner and my company is prepared to deal and hold paper. It would be an IOU and an agreement to pay out through revenues gained by the acquisition of the lands.”

Mikael hopes that, as a part of the deal, that LIAT will approach international lending agencies such as the IMF in order to secure funding to create a headquarters, hanger bays, and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility that would not only service LIAT, but other regional carriers.

“It would mean that they will increase their revenues while at the same time providing a lot more employment and creating what would end up being a base through which it can develop new areas of revenue.”

Mikael has said that she is presently working at the level of selling the offer to the LIAT management hierarchy to ultimately be presented to the shareholder governments for final approval.

When asked about her confidence in the shareholder governments accepting the proposal, Mikeal says that, “I am getting traction already as far as the need is concerned, and I expect to get it at every level. I see LIAT, hopefully, using their base to develop better relations with the other carriers in the region. LIAT will become the leader because they have the largest ATR fleet in the region.”
