About Antigua...
(pronounced An-tee-gah)

(See also About Barbuda below)

Area Code (268)

Antigua is, of course, a major vacation spot in its own right, with many excellent hotels and hundreds of secluded bays and inlets, fringed by coral reefs and white sand beaches. The Heritage Quay complex at the seafront of St. John's, the capital, is a development with wide boulevards, sophisticated shops, casino, restaurants and hotel.

It's duty-free area is particularly attractive to cruise ship passengers, since cruise ships can dock right at Heritage Quay pier. From Heritage Quay it's an easy stroll to Redcliffe Quay which is a beautifully restored complex of boutiques and restaurants, with much of the original building structure in place.

St. John's itself is built around a beautiful, natural deepwater harbour. Its parallel streets climb gently towards an open park in front of the Parliament building; the Saturday morning market, the Museum and the twin-towered cathedral at the top of St. John's are well worth a visit.

Beyond the capital, the most famous landmark is Nelson's Dockyard on the south coast. Once a vital naval base for the British fleet, and now carefully restored, it is situated on English Harbour, one of the safest landlocked harbours in the world. Nelson was based there in the late 18th century, and his home is in an excellent state of preservation.

Area Code (268) | Population: 1,200

Barbuda, which lies some 30 miles north of Antigua, is a flat coral island rising to only 143 feet.

Just a short flight away from Antigua, Barbuda has utterly deserted beaches and is the ideal location to experience a Robinson Crusoe-type holiday. Take along your own snorkeling equipment to explore the clear and shallow waters.

Marine life abounds - several thousands of frigate birds have made a section of Barbuda their home and it's a pleasant boat ride across calm waters to the bird sanctuary from the airstrip at the village of Codrington.

Barbuda is also well known as a sea turtle sanctuary.
